The good people who cover the NBA on ESPN have decided to tie LeBron James to the Warriors again. And you know what? It’s because the Warriors would be interested.
But would the Lakers and James? It doesn’t seem like it. James can be traded on Dec. 15, though he has a no-trade clause in his deal. So even if the Warriors could convince the Lakers, they’d have to convince LeBron.
Oh, and along with all that, you know Bronny James, right? He’s LeBron’s son. He is a rookie in LA. He would certainly have to be part of any trade.
Now, I don’t think all this is as ridiculous as it sounds. LeBron isn’t leading anyone to a title these days. He turns 40 years old in two weeks. And he will be the most talented 40-year-old the NBA has ever seen. But that’s not saying a whole lot. When you hit 40, you normally are an NBA benchwarmer at best.
So there really is no need for the Lakers to keep LeBron. They are spinning their wheels on the road to nowhere. But James with Stephen Curry and the Warriors? Maybe that could go someplace. Maybe. I doubt it, but it would have a lot better chance than whatever it is they’ve built in LA.
Anyway, back to the Warriors. It seems that they too are relying too heavily on their old guys (Curry, Draymond Green, etc.) and not getting enough from the younger guys and free-agent acquisitions. But as one scout once told me, “Guys signed late in free agency are signed late in free agency for a reason.”
The Warriors have a bunch of those guys. Now they may again have an interest in James, who admitted they tried to trade for him last season. Will they again? Probably. But it will probably be the same result — and neither the trade idea nor the teams will get very far.
