The Wizards are among several teams looking to move guaranteed money ahead of the NBA season and have been active in talks, as relayed by Keith Smith of Spotrac. And one name to keep an eye on is guard Johnny Davis, per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports.
Davis, of course, is a former No. 10 overall draft pick, but has yet to develop into a starter or strong reserve in Washington. Another reason the Wizards may be looking to move him?Jared Butler.
Butler, who’s on a non-guaranteed deal, has forced himself into the conversation with a strong preseason showing, putting up 6.8 points and 4.2 assists in just over 14 minutes per game.
So, what does that mean for Davis? Well, it’s not good. The Wizards reportedly aren’t picking up his fourth-year option, and despite hitting a clutch shot in the preseason finale, his overall body of work — both in the preseason and over his first two years — has left plenty to be desired.
Davis has struggled with shooting efficiency, and with Butler knocking on the door, Davis’ spot is looking more precarious by the minute.
The challenge for Washington, though, is that Davis’ $5.3 million salary still holds value, especially in a league where expiring contracts can grease the wheels on a trade. Waiving him outright would mean losing that potential trade chip. But hanging onto him could mean losing out on Butler, a player who has clearly impressed.
The Wizards could explore a bigger trade before the start of the regular season, or they might wait until the last minute to make a final call on Davis. Either way, it’s clear they have options.
