HBO has released its trailer for the upcoming series on the Showtime Lakers of the 1980s, entitled “Winning Time.”
Those Lakers won five titles in a decade and featured the likes of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, Michael Cooper and Kurt Rambis, with Pat Riley serving as coach.
The series is due to start airing in March based on Jeff Pearlman‘s excellent book, “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s.”

The show definitely has the look and feel of something that was made during that time and looks to be picking up in 1979 right as the Lakers were set to take Magic Johnson with the top pick in the draft,” wrote Corey Hansford of Lakers Daily. “The trailer also shows the people such as Abdul-Jabbar, Riley, Jerry West, Norm Nixon and Jeanie Buss as well as many others all being represented in the show. Needless to say, the drama will be covering the Lakers from all sides.”
As Hansford also wrote, this isn’t the only show coming out about the NBA’s most star-studded franchise, as “Netflix has given the green light to a ten-episode workplace comedy inspired by the front office of the franchise. The project involves Mindy Kaling of The Office fame, and Elaine Ko from Modern Family.”
