West Notes: Grizzlies, Dillon Brooks, Spurs, Thunder

Grizzlies

It seems as if the Grizzlies have been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, and you can add forward Dillon Brooks to the list.

As announced by NBA executive VP Joe Dumars, Brooks has been suspended for one game after picking up his 16th technical foul of the season.

Brooks was assessed that particular tech in the Grizzlies’ loss to the Nuggets on Friday. He will miss Sunday’s road game vs. the Clippers.

  • Also out Sunday will be point guard Ja Morant, who is away from the team for the next two games after a questionable social media post. The NBA is investigating. We have that full story here.
  • Along with that, power forward Brandon Clarke will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon. (Full story.)
  • In case you missed it, Brooks recently had some harsh words for forward Draymond Green and the Warriors. You can read that full story here.

Spurs

Th Spurs claimed forward/center Sandro Mamukelashvili off waivers and waived forward/center Isaiah Roby, the team announced in a press release.

Mamukelashvili immediately received a standard contract, putting San Antonio’s roster at 17. He was waived from a two-way deal with the Bucks earlier in the week.

Roby spent the first three seasons of his career with the Thunder before being waived last season. The Spurs claimed him shortly thereafter, but he has seen limited action this year.

Should Roby go unclaimed, the Spurs will be off the hook for the remainder of his $1.93 million salary, as noted by Rory Maher of Hoops Rumors.

Thunder

Point guard Jared Butler has officially signed a two-way contract with the Thunder, the team announced in a release.

Butler, 22, is 6-foot-3 and appeared in 43 games with the Jazz last season as a rookie, averaging 3.8 points on 41 percent shooting. He has spent this entire season with the Grand Rapids Gold of the G League.

Originally selected by the Pelicans with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Butler signed with the Jazz in August of that same year. He was waived by Utah in October.

In 18 games with the Gold, he’s averaging 19.5 points and 5.2 assists, shooting 48 percent from the field and a sizzling 46 percent on 3-pointers.

Butler was a consensus All-American and was instrumental in Baylor winning the 2021 NCAA championship. He was named Most Outstanding Player at the Final Four.

  • In related news, the Thunder have lost forward Kenrich Williams for the season, as we relayed here.
