What’s next for Anthony Davis as Mavericks weigh options?

The biggest question in Dallas isn’t when Anthony Davis will return from his calf strain — it’s whether the Mavericks are ready to move on altogether.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, the possibility of trading Davis would have been unthinkable under former GM Nico Harrison.

But with Harrison gone and new leadership under Patrick Dumont, league insiders believe the team may start gauging the market for the 32-year-old big man.

Multiple executives told ESPN that trading Davis could make sense as the Mavericks pivot toward building around rookie phenom Cooper Flagg. The challenge? Dallas doesn’t control its own first-round picks from 2027 through 2030, the result of aggressive moves made while chasing contention around Luka Doncic.

“You have Flagg, but you’re old and you don’t own your picks,” one Western Conference executive said. “They need to be comfortable taking two steps back if that’s what it takes.

“Be patient. They need to lose this year, but I don’t see Dumont being comfortable with that. It’s not natural for a new owner.”

Davis remains one of the NBA’s most dominant two-way players when healthy, but his durability and $40 million salary complicate trade talks.

Still, several league sources told ESPN that testing the market in the coming months is “necessary due diligence.”

“You don’t go two timelines anymore,” another Western exec added. “You take what you can get for Davis — if you can get anything.”
