The Wizards have fired assistant coach/director of player development Alex McLean and assistant coach for analytics Dean Oliver, per Josh Robbins and Fred Katz of The Athletic.
The Wizards are continuing to search for a new head of basketball operations after firing ex-GM Tommy Sheppard last month. Their search is reportedly being led by former Georgetown coach John Thompson III, now a member of the Wizards’ front office.
Coach Wes Unseld Jr.’s job is said to be safe regardless of who the Wizards hire to run basketball operations.
As for finding that person, Robbins wrote that “it’s fair to describe the Wizards’ efforts to hire Tommy Sheppard’s successor as relatively early in the process.”
McLean began as a player development coach under Scott Brooks with the Wizards in 2017-18. He then moved into an assistant role with Brooks, then remained when Unseld was hired in 2021.
Oliver is the author of the book Basketball on Paper and has been employed by the Wizards since 2019.
(2/2) McLean just completed his second season as assistant coach/director of player development. Oliver, the author of the book "Basketball on Paper", is widely regarded as an innovator in the field of basketball analytics.
