While it’s been another season without the playoffs for the Wizards, coach Wes Unseld Jr. isn’t going anywhere, general manager Tommy Sheppard told Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
“He is our coach moving forward,” Sheppard said, via Robbins.
Unseld, 47, is the son of late Wizards/Bullets legend Wes Unseld and is in his second season as a head coach. He is 69-92 in that time (entering Wednesday), but has seen multiple injuries to key players, such as shooting guard Bradley Beal and forward Kristaps Porzingis.
Unseld’s contract is good for two more seasons after this, and clearly, the Wizards want to give him more time. But another season of missing the playoffs may not be as kind — to Unseld, or Sheppard.
In pro sports, that’s just often the way it goes, and the Wizards have been spinning their wheels for a few years now. So needless to say, a key offseason awaits.
Wes Unseld Jr. will remain the Washington Wizards’ coach for the 2023-24 season, @TheAthletic has learned exclusively. Story:https://t.co/VbMAw0DbqE
