Wizards fans have been asking for a new look. The team has noticed.
Washington executives told The Athletic that they’re well aware of the push for a rebrand, whether through social media, customer surveys or conversations with fans at games.
“I keep seeing it, too: ‘Rebrand! Rebrand!’” Monumental Sports & Entertainment chief marketing officer Hunter Lochmann said.
The complaints are pretty straightforward. Some fans believe the Wizards’ red, white and blue uniforms, which have been in place since 2011, feel dated and too similar to other teams around the league. Others want something bolder and more distinctive to match what feels like a new era for the franchise.
One fan, Justin Larson, has even been creating his own Wizards uniform concepts and posting them online in hopes of catching the attention of team officials.
He may not get his exact designs. But the larger idea appears to have reached the front office.
“There’s an openness to that,” MSE president of business operations Jim Van Stone said, via The Athletic. “Certainly, we will be in the mix of looking at uniform designs.”
The Wizards are targeting the 2027-28 season as a possible starting point for changes, which would coincide with the completion of renovations at Capital One Arena.
“We are definitely aiming towards that ’27-28 season in that timing,” Lochmann said.
A major logo change could take longer, and one thing the team says is not under consideration is a name change. The Wizards are staying the Wizards.
Still, with AJ Dybantsa, Trae Young and Anthony Davis bringing renewed attention to the franchise, plenty of fans believe this is the right time for something new.
And for once, it sounds like the team is listening.
