The Wizards are giving Skal Labissiere another NBA look.
Washington has agreed to sign the former first-round pick to a 10-day contract, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, via agent Daniel Hazan. It is a full-circle moment of sorts for Labissiere, who has been grinding his way back to the league after spending several seasons outside of it.
Labissiere, drafted in 2016, previously logged 148 NBA games with Sacramento and Portland from 2016-19, averaging 7.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in limited minutes. After time in the G League and Puerto Rico, he resurfaced briefly with the Kings on a 10-day deal last season. Now, he gets another shot.
This opportunity has been earned. Labissiere has been one of the most productive bigs in the G League this season with Washington’s Capital City Go-Go, averaging 19.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, and 2.1 assists while shooting an eye-popping .554 from the field and .441 from three.
The Wizards had an open roster spot following their Trae Young trade, so no corresponding move was needed. Labissiere’s deal runs through February 5, giving Washington up to six games to evaluate whether this is a short-term cameo or something that sticks.
At minimum, it is another earned chapter in a long comeback.
