Former Hawks GM and Warriors executive Travis Schlenk will seemingly have several roles in his new position as senior VP of player personnel. And one of them will be overseeing the scouting department, per Josh Robbins of The Athletic.
More specifically, all members of the Wizards’ player evaluation department will report to Schlenk — whether they scout the amateur, international or NBA level, Robbins noted.
Schlenk, of course, will report to new head of basketball operations Michael Winger, hired last week after a run as GM with the Clippers.
Winger still is looking to hire a No. 2 man to serve as GM, per Robbins. Both that person and Schlenk reportedly will have a say in shaping the roster, as will coach Wes Unseld Jr. But Winger will have final say.
“Winger’s background centers less on player evaluation and more on developing broad roster construction and organizational strategies, handling negotiations and navigating the salary cap and the collective bargaining agreement,” Robbins wrote.
Schlenk was replaced by the Hawks with Landry Fields in the middle of the season. Atlanta never formally announced hat Schlenk had been dismissed, only that he had been reassigned.
