It looks like Trae Young’s season is over.
The Wizards announced Saturday that Young reinjured his right quadriceps during Monday’s game against Golden State. Imaging also revealed lower back irritation, per The Athletic’s Josh Robbins.
Neither injury requires surgery. Both will be treated conservatively. Still, the outcome is the same.
Young has appeared in just five games for Washington since arriving in a January trade. Before that, he played only 10 games with the Hawks, dealing with a sprained MCL and the same quad issue.
In other words, this has been a lost year.
When he has been on the floor, the production has been modest. Young averaged 15.2 points and 6.2 assists in 20.8 minutes with the Wizards. Now the focus shifts to what comes next.
Young holds a $49 million player option for next season. If he declines it, he could work out an extension with Washington that begins in 2026-27. If he opts in, he would still be eligible for a longer extension the following offseason.
Either way, the Wizards will be making a decision based more on track record than what they saw this season.
