Sixers Make NBA History After Promoting Recently Acquired Jared Butler

The Philadelphia 76ers are converting Jared Butler’s two-way contract into a standard deal and promoting him to their 15-man roster, agent Mark Bartelstein told NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN. The Sixers later confirmed the move.Jared Butler, 76ers, Sixers, NBA

Butler, 24, is 6-foot-3 and will receive a two-year contract at the minimum salary.

He was traded from the Washington Wizards to the Sixers at last week’s trade deadline in a deal that also sent four second-round picks to Washington in exchange for Reggie Jackson and a first-round pick.

This marks the first time in NBA history that a team has traded for a player on a two-way contract and subsequently promoted him to a standard deal.

A former Baylor standout, Butler is in his fourth NBA season. He appeared in 32 games with the Wizards, averaging 6.9 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 11.3 minutes per game. He shot 48.3% from the field, 36.6% from three-point range, and 77.8% from the free-throw line.

Since joining the Sixers, he has averaged 10.0 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.7 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game, including a start in Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.

While the Sixers currently have a full 15-man roster, two players, Chuma Okeke and David Roddy, are on 10-day contracts. Okeke’s deal expires Sunday, and with his contract set to expire before the team’s next game, Butler is expected to take his spot.

Butler’s contract mirrors the situation of another two-way player, Justin Edwards, who was promoted to a standard contract last week. Edwards received a two-year, minimum-salary deal, which includes a team option for the second season.

It is possible that Butler’s new contract could also include a team option for the 2025-26 season, although the full details have not been confirmed.
