Nets star Kyrie Irving has a player option on his contract, but says he has no intention of leaving Brooklyn. The option makes him eligible for a contract extension.
“In terms of my extension, man, I don’t really plan on going anywhere,” he said. “So this is just added motivation for our franchise to be at the top of the league for the next few years.”
Irving and the Nets were swept by the Celtics after making the playoffs as a No. 7 seed. Irving started the season ineligible to play in home games for being unvaccinated. Eventually, the ban was lifted and Irving was cleared.
But it couldn’t save the Nets’ season, as they struggled to find consistent scoring following the James Harden trade with the 76ers. It didn’t help that their big prize in the deal, Ben Simmons, missed the entire season.
Irving’s option is worth $36.5 million. He could either pick it up, or turn it down and sign a longer deal with the team as a free agent.
“When I say I’m here with (Kevin Durant), I think that really entails us managing this franchise together alongside (Nets owner Joe Tsai) and (GM Sean Marks),” Irving told reporters, via Scott Cacciola of the New York Times.
