Pistons power forward Marvin Bagley III is eligible to become a free agent this summer, with a qualifying offer on his expiring contract.
Per James Edwards III of The Athletic, the Pistons would like to sign Bagley to multiyear deal, as opposed to one for for just next season (with perhaps a player option for a second).
“A three-year deal is what Detroit would like to get done,” Edwards wrote, via HoopsHype. “This is really where the only hurdle could present itself. Bagley, given that he is young and talented offensively, could be more inclined to seek a shorter deal in order to test the open market sooner and grab a bigger payday, assuming all goes well over the next season or two.”
On the bright side, Bagley and the Pistons seem to hold each other in high regard, “so it feels like a three-year deal with a player option on the third could be a good middle ground for both sides,” Edwards noted.
Bagley, 23 is 6-foot-11 and was acquired by the Pistons in a trade with the Kings in February. It was a small sample size, but he seemed to get a new lease on his basketball life in 18 appearances with Detroit, averaging 14.6 points and 6.8 rebounds.
