It was the decision of Hornets owner Michael Jordan, and not GM Mitch Kupchak, to fire former coach James Borrego, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Jordan was not pleased with the Hornets’ results defensively, leading to the decision, Fischer reported.
While the Hornets increased their win total by 10 games over last season, their defensive rating slipped from 16th in 2020-21 to 22nd, putting them in the bottom half in the league. “The Hornets also gave up 144 points to Indiana in last season’s play-in tournament and then 132 to Atlanta this season, both blowout losses,” noted Rory Maher of Hoops Rumors.
Borrego coached the Hornets three seasons, increasing the team’s win total by 10 games in each of his final two.
Charlotte has begun interviewing candidates for the vacancy created by Boreggo’s dismissal, with veteran coach Mike D’Antoni perhaps in the driver’s seat, as we relayed earlier.
