The Wizards believe Bradley Beal is committed for the long term and trying to find ways to complement him by exploring the trade market.
Per Quinton Mayo of Substack, the Wizards have “checked in” with the Pacers on Malcolm Brogdon, with the Spurs on Dejounte Murray and with the Thunder on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Of the three, it is believed Brogdon is the only one available — though he is said to be very available, as relayed by our Alejandro Avila.
Beal is on board with the acquisition of any of the three, a source told Mayo.
What isn’t just a rumor is the idea that the Wizards are on the lookout for a point guard, and it’s hard to say if they can land an impactful one with their No. 10 overall draft pick. So if they can’t land a veteran, they could potentially try to move up in the draft and target Purdue’s Jaden Ivey, Mayo wrote.
The Wizards could also turn to another team other than those mentioned in search of backcourt help. For instance, they have already been linked to Cavaliers restricted free agent Collin Sexton. As Mayo added, Washington is “casting a wide net” in its search.
And while Murray and Gilgeous-Alexander seem like fixtures in their current situations, teams that failed to make the playoffs — such as the Spurs and Thunder — are generally open to revamping their roster, even if it means trading away their current stars and trying to start again.
Front office types will deny that, but any GM of a non-playoff team often tries to buy time by making multiple moves, acting as if it’s part of some grand plan. From the sounds of things, the Wizards are at least checking around to see if that’s the case, as they try to build around Beal.
