Rumor: Luka Doncic On Track To Sign NBA’s First $400M+ Contract With Lakers In 2028

Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic may have just signed his latest contract, but the next one could be the biggest in NBA history.

According to Lakers Daily, the Lakers are preparing to offer Doncic a five-year deal worth more than $400 million in 2028. He is expected to decline his player option and hit free agency that summer. The deal would make him the first player ever to earn more than $80 million per season.

Doncic, 26, signed a three-year, $165 million extension with Los Angeles on Aug. 2. He could have taken a four-year deal worth $229 million, but opted for a shorter contract that gives him flexibility and positions him for an even larger payday as the league’s salary cap continues to climb.

The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2025 trade deadline in a franchise-altering move. He quickly became the new face of the franchise, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists to close the regular season.

He then raised those numbers to 30.2 points per game in the playoffs.

The report also indicates the next contract is expected to include a no-trade clause, something very few players have ever received.

Doncic has reportedly played an active role in helping the Lakers build their roster this summer, including recruiting veteran pieces such as Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart. He also appears to have slimmed down significantly, which some league insiders believe will help extend his prime.

For his career, Doncic holds averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists. That ranks him third all-time in points per game, behind only Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.

The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals with Doncic in 2024 but chose not to offer the five-year supermax. That opened the door for his eventual move to Los Angeles. Now, the Lakers appear ready to lock him in for the even longer term.
