Report: Hawks’ Trae Young resigned to idea extension not coming this summer

Trae Young is like any working person and would certainly like a contract extension. He also seems to know that one isn’t likely coming from the Hawks this summer.

Per The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, Young is “resigned” to the idea that Atlanta will not offer a contract extension anytime soon.

“Yet league sources tell me there are no plans for Young and the Hawks to engage in extension talks this summer,” Fischer wrote. “This, though, does not necessarily come as a surprise… Sources say Young’s side has actually been resigned for some time to the prospect of seeing out the final guaranteed year on his current contract rather than securing an extension, like his current contract, worth in excess of $200 million. He’d then have to make a decision about his $49 million player option for 2026-27.”

The Hawks definitely made some intriguing additions this offseason, particularly the trade for Kristaps Porzingis. They also added guards Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard in lower-scale moves.

Along with that, second-year forward Zaccharie Risacher already has some invaluable learning-on-the-fly playing time and Jalen Johnson will be back soon from injury.

So Atlanta does indeed have all the makings of a dark horse. How it all plays out may decide the Hawks’ next steps with Young.
