The Cavaliers have agreed to a one-year contract with free agent center Thomas Bryant, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

That puts the Cavs at 14 standard contracts entering training camp next week.

They needed an extra body to help relieve center Jarrett Allen and power forward Evan Mobley in the frontcourt, and Bryant undoubtedly fits the description.

He recently worked out for the Knicks, though they decided to take a pass in favor of backcourt depth. Bryant reportedly “really impressed” during his audition for New York.

Bryant, 28, is 6-foot-10 and appeared in 66 total games last season with the Heat and Pacers, averaging 6.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and shooting 50.8 percent from the field.

“Bryant played a key reserve role on the Pacers’ second-half run to the Finals and now enters his ninth NBA season,” Charania wrote.

The Cavaliers open training camp next Tuesday (Sept. 30) in Florida.

  1. Gotta love this.

Don’t really know if he’ll be on the court when we’re playing our best basketball.

But when we are (playing our best basketball), Thomas Bryant will still be part of the reason.

Love his competitive commitment and spirit, and joy of living in the moments. It’s energizing to everybody. Brings confidence to everybody. And fun for everybody.

Like helping Gilmore reach his “happy place”. Bryant’s simple play and passion on and off will help this team stay in the moment, extend our momentum, and deepen the impact of the explosive runs Cavs have been getting good at lately.

Would have loved Cousins, but this is a special signing. He has a champions’ spirit! And comes from some great recent experiences. Has the right game experiences and coaching history to be the perfect fit here in his role.

Higher and higher marks for Altman every year. Either he changed, the plans changed, or they’re finally having the opportunity to come to fruition. If I was harsh in the past for stuff like Dylan Windler picks, selling Sexton to fans as a potential star instead of what he is, a lot of the narrative stuff.. but credit where due now, now that we’re trying to win basketball games. Hopefully he has set us up for somewhat long term success, and can continue to make winning every year the permanent franchise goal.
