Sources: Cavs have bigger names on radar after LeBron James decision

The Cavaliers can finally move forward, and Jonathan Kuminga and Mario Hezonja aren’t necessarily the biggest names to watch.

Sources tell Hoops Wire that Cleveland has some higher-profile possibilities on its radar that have yet to surface publicly as the organization begins operating with clarity following LeBron James‘ decision to sign with the 76ers.

Whether any of those possibilities actually materialize is another matter. But the Cavs are exploring their options and, according to sources, aren’t simply settling for whatever remains after missing out on James.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst identified Kuminga and Hezonja as two free agents to watch for Cleveland.

Kuminga has been on the Cavs’ radar throughout free agency. The 23-year-old became unrestricted after the Hawks declined his option and has also drawn interest from several other teams.

He split last season between the Warriors and Hawks, averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 46.3 percent from the field.

There’s some familiarity there. Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson worked with Kuminga as an assistant with Golden State, while Kuminga has worked out in Cleveland in the past. His agent, Aaron Turner, is also a Northeast Ohio native. The Cavs are Kuminga’s preferred destination, sources say.

Hezonja is the more unexpected name. The former No. 5 overall pick has played overseas since his last NBA season with the Trail Blazers in 2019-20. The 31-year-old is interested in returning to the league after rebuilding his career in Europe.

Cleveland also is expected to re-sign James Harden now that the LeBron situation has been resolved.

So while James isn’t coming back for a third stint, don’t expect the Cavs to simply bring back Harden, make a minor addition and call it an offseason.

They’re still looking. And sources indicate names are being discussed behind the scenes that haven’t made it into the rumor mill yet.
