Jazz expect Georges Niang to make season debut soon

The Jazz say forward Georges Niang will be re-evaluated in 10 to 14 days as he works his way back from a stress reaction in his left foot.

The fourth-metatarsal issue has kept him out since Utah traded for him last month in a deal that sent rookie RJ Luis to Boston and helped the Celtics clear some money off their books.

Niang, now back in the place where he spent five solid seasons, is expected to have a real role once he’s healthy.

He averaged 16.6 points and 5.8 rebounds last season with Cleveland and Atlanta, shooting a strong 40.6 percent from deep. Utah sees value in that — both in the locker room and as a steady stretch-four who can plug immediate holes.

The Jazz are just 5-10, but they’ve made it clear they aren’t looking to bottom out. And with starting center Walker Kessler out for the year, they could use extra frontcourt help.

Niang figures to slot in either next to Kevin Love or as part of Utah’s second-unit punch once he’s cleared.
