The Knicks made what was described as a “real offer” for Giannis Antetokounmpo in the offseason, but an in-season blockbuster looks unlikely right now, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
Begley said Antetokounmpo would almost certainly have to force his way to New York for anything to materialize, and even then, the Bucks would not be obligated to honor the request.
One league source told Begley the Knicks like their roster as constructed and feel well-positioned in a wide-open Eastern Conference.
Paul chatter cools: The Clippers announced Wednesday they are “parting ways” with Chris Paul. What that means remains fluid, since he cannot be traded until December 15 and is unlikely to be waived.
The Knicks were previously linked to Paul as they explored backup playmaking help, but Begley says a trade for the 40-year-old is “highly unlikely” at the moment.
Opinions mixed: Kristian Winfield of The New York Daily News and Mike Vaccaro of The New York Post both took a look at the pros and cons of a potential Paul move.
Vaccaro believes Paul would be an upgrade over second-year guard Tyler Kolek and might be available for a light return.
Winfield sees the other side, noting Paul’s age, declining production, and defensive slippage. Still, Winfield acknowledges the Knicks need a steady hand behind Jalen Brunson, and Paul is one of the greatest playmakers in league history.
Backup point needs: Kolek has been getting the backup point guard minutes lately, but the Knicks have struggled during his stints, as Stefan Bondy of The New York Post writes.
That performance gap continues to push the front office toward exploring veteran options.
Bondy lists nine guards executives believe could be available before February, including Paul, Jose Alvarado (Pelicans), Tre Jones (Bulls), and Tyus Jones (Magic).
The Knicks have some assets. The question now is whether they will use them.
