LeBron James has spent most of his career making the right play. On Thursday night, that instinct finally snapped a record that felt untouchable.
James scored only eight points in the Lakers’ 123-120 win over the Raptors, ending his run of 1,297 straight regular season games in double figures.
It was the longest streak in NBA history by a mile. And when asked afterward what he thought about it ending, LeBron gave the shortest answer possible.
“None,” he said. “We won.”
The streak did not end because he ran out of chances. James checked back in with just over five minutes to go, sitting on six points and shooting 3-of-15. He scored once more to tie it.
He missed a mid-range jumper that would have pushed him to 10. On the final possession, Austin Reaves swung him the ball. LeBron could have forced a shot.
Instead, he kicked it to Rui Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura buried it at the buzzer. Ballgame.
“Just playing the game the right way,” James said. “That is how I was taught.”
Lakers coach JJ Redick added that LeBron was “acutely aware” of the moment but still chose the unselfish play. His teammates were not surprised.
“He is such an unselfish player,” forward Jake LaRavia said. “He just made the right play.”
The next closest active streak belongs to Kevin Durant at 267. Michael Jordan once held the mark at 866.
As for the game, Austin Reaves erupted for 44 points and was the biggest reason the Lakers won on a night without Luka Doncic.
