Peyton Watson hasn’t played a game for the Cavaliers yet, but he’s spending at least part of his offseason in pretty good company.
Watson has been working out alongside LeBron James and Kevin Durant, with videos of the sessions surfacing on social media over the weekend, as noted by Zach Weiss of Cavs On SI.
Not bad company for a 23-year-old forward preparing for a considerably larger role with a new team.
The Cavs acquired Watson from the Nuggets in an August sign-and-trade, then signed him to a four-year, $88 million contract. They surrendered an unprotected 2031 first-round pick and a 2032 second-rounder in the deal. So, yeah, the Cavs are expecting a little more than another guy for the rotation.
Watson averaged 13.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.2 blocks last season while shooting 40.2 percent on 3-pointers. He’s expected to step directly into Cleveland’s starting lineup at small forward alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
We can probably avoid reading too much into offseason workouts. NBA players work out with other NBA players all summer. Still, if you’re Watson, there are certainly worse guys to be around than LeBron and Durant.
Interestingly, he’ll see one of those workout partners pretty quickly. The Cavs open the regular season Oct. 22 in Philadelphia against James and the 76ers.
But right now, they’re apparently teammates. At least in the gym.
