Cooper Flagg delivered a historic night in Salt Lake City, even if it came in a loss.
The 18-year-old scored 42 points in Dallas’ 140-133 overtime defeat to Utah, setting the NBA record for most points by a player under 19.
He passed LeBron James’ previous mark of 37, set in 2003, and became just the third teenager in league history to post at least 40 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
Flagg added seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and a steal while continuing a strong stretch of play. Over his last seven games, the No. 1 overall pick is averaging 25.7 points per contest.
“Obviously we didn’t win, so it’s tough to enjoy it,” Flagg told reporters after the game.
With Anthony Davis sidelined and Dallas short-handed, Flagg has taken on an expanded offensive role.
Coach Jason Kidd praised the rookie’s growth, while teammates acknowledged Utah eventually had no choice but to double him.
Despite the milestone, Flagg focused on execution late, noting turnovers and missed chances in overtime as areas to clean up.
Heat
Nikola Jovic’s return to Miami’s rotation was cut short just seconds in.
Jovic exited Monday’s game against Toronto after landing hard on his right elbow during a fast-break dunk attempt. X-rays were negative, and he will undergo an MRI, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press.
The 22-year-old forward has struggled to find consistency this season, averaging 7.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in a limited role.
Pistons
Despite recent speculation, Anthony Davis is not on Detroit’s radar.
League sources told The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson that the Pistons remain focused on internal growth rather than pursuing a major trade. Detroit improved to 21-5 with a win in Boston and continues to lead the Eastern Conference.
While the front office has said it will remain opportunistic, sources indicate the Pistons are content with their roster and unlikely to pursue a blockbuster ahead of the trade deadline.
