Timberwolves
The Timberwolves still remember how last season ended, and on Friday night, they played like it.
Anthony Edwards returned from a three-game injury absence and delivered when it mattered, scoring 26 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and drilling the go-ahead three with 38.5 seconds left to lift Minnesota past the defending champion Thunder, 112-107.
Edwards then sealed it with a defensive rebound and a steal on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who still finished with 35 points and seven assists for the Thunder (25-3), now losers twice in three games after opening 24-1.
The building was loud, the edge was sharp, and Chris Finch didn’t last long. Minnesota’s coach was ejected midway through the first quarter after unloading on officials, restrained by assistants and security as Target Center buzzed.
Julius Randle struggled (3-of-15 shooting) but his miss at the line late helped keep the Wolves alive long enough for Edwards to close. Minnesota improved to 18-10.
Spurs
Another night, another line in the history books for Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs star recorded his 100th straight regular-season game with at least one block in a 126-98 win over Atlanta, finishing with 26 points, 12 assists and two rejections.
Only Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo have ever done it. Wembanyama is doing it before turning 21.
San Antonio is 20-7 and well ahead of last season’s pace.
76ers
Philadelphia walked into Madison Square Garden and did something almost no one has done this season.
Tyrese Maxey scored 30 points as the 76ers beat the Knicks 116-107, snapping New York’s six-game win streak.
With Joel Embiid out, Andre Drummond filled the void with 14 points and 13 rebounds — and yes, he went 3-for-4 from three.
The Knicks celebrated their NBA Cup title beforehand. The celebration didn’t last.
