Anthony Davis chatter lingers, but Hawks aren’t biting yet

The idea of Hawks and Mavericks finding common ground on an Anthony Davis trade remains more theoretical than real, at least for now.

According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the two teams are essentially in a holding pattern. And the reasons are fairly straightforward.

Atlanta’s long-standing reluctance to dip into the luxury tax makes taking on Davis’ massive contract a tough sell unless Trae Young is part of the outgoing money. Young holds a $48.9 million player option for next season, while Davis is owed $58.5 million next year and $62.8 million in 2027–28.

That alone complicates matters.

Stein also notes that while the Hawks have been willing to listen on former No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher in the right deal, an in-season move for Davis is not viewed internally as that deal.

One other factor quietly looming is Rich Paul, who represents Davis and has strong relationships throughout the Mavericks organization.

Stein reports there is some belief Paul views Atlanta as a logical long-term landing spot for his client, though any serious movement may have to wait until the offseason.

But at this point, it appears patience, not urgency, is driving this conversation.
