The Wizards have not begun contract discussions with Trae Young, and there’s no firm timetable for when that might change.

General manager Will Dawkins told Josh Robbins of The Athletic that the organization’s priority is getting clarity on Young’s health before turning to long-term matters.

“We’re learning more about his injury status,” Dawkins said. “We’ll know more this weekend as he gets through it. Our hope is to see him with our guys so he can make a decision going into next summer as well.

“When that will be, I don’t know, but we won’t rush him. We want him to be 100 percent healthy before he goes out there.”

Young echoed that patient approach during his introductory press conference, framing his early focus around impact rather than contracts. The four-time All-Star said his goal is to elevate Washington’s young core once he’s able to return, both as a scorer and playmaker.

“I just want to bring the best out of these young guys,” Young said. “When I’m able to be right and get on the court, I want to show that I can bring the best out of this team… and hopefully make an All-Star or two out of some of these other guys.”
