The NBA’s investigation into the Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers has reached a point where nothing appears to be off the table.
According to Tom Haberstroh of Yahoo Sports, the league is considering the nuclear option as part of its ongoing probe into alleged salary-cap circumvention involving Leonard and the now-bankrupt tree-planting company Aspiration. One possible outcome under discussion is the voiding of Leonard’s contract.
Both Leonard and the Clippers have denied any wrongdoing, but the league continues to examine whether Aspiration was used to funnel improper payments in violation of the cap.
If Leonard’s deal were voided, he would immediately become a free agent, a scenario that would send shockwaves through the league with the regular season entering its final stretch.
Haberstroh reports that the Lakers, Warriors, and Knicks have been mentioned as potential suitors if that outcome materializes.
Other penalties being weighed by the NBA reportedly include significant fines and the loss of future draft picks. With the Clippers having already hosted the 2026 All-Star Game at Intuit Dome, many around the league believe a formal resolution could be approaching.
Lost in the speculation is the fact Leonard is still playing at an elite level. The 34-year-old is averaging a career-high 28.0 points per game, has earned his seventh All-Star selection, and is owed $50.3 million next season after making $50 million this year.
Even if the NBA ultimately stops short of voiding the contract, league executives are watching closely. One way or another, Leonard’s long-term future with the Clippers feels less settled than ever.
