Random dribbles following the Cavaliers’ 128-122 road loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday.
1. Sometimes, it’s just not your night. Sometimes, the night belongs to the other guy.
2. That’s really all this one boils down to. The Cavs were good. The Magic were better. The Cavs made key shots. The Magic made more.
3. That’s just life in the big leagues. For one, Orlando has been playing its best basketball of the season. Orlando was also at home. Orlando has now won five straight. And it took some fairly amazing perimeter shots for Orlando to get this one.
4. Perhaps the Cavs’ most noticeable flaw was their nine misses on free throws (17-26). The Magic also made more from the line (28) than Cleveland shot. That wasn’t necessarily bad officiating. It was more like the Magic just being ultra-aggressive on offense.
5. So, no. Not a huge deal as far as the Cavs are concerned. Unless you expect them to go 82-0, that is. And yes, I know, some of you do.
6. James Harden was brilliant with 30 points and a eight assists, shooting 11-of-16 from the floor. Harden sometimes looks like the old guy at the Y who shows up and shows everyone how it’s done. He just knows the game, man.
7. Meanwhile, Donovan Mitchell struggled with his shot (9-of-24), but had a few bright moments, including a late three. Speaking of, Keon Ellis was fantastic with 20 points, including a bevy of threes when the Cavs needed them most. It just wasn’t enough. Again, the Magic just finished better.
8. On the bright side, the Cavs have generally responded well after losses — especially since acquiring Harden. Translation: This hardly feels like a big-picture problem. The Cavs just lost a game.
9. Evan Mobley also did all he could with 18 points (8-of-13 shooting) and 13 rebounds. But the Cavs miss Jarrett Allen, and they most certainly do against a bigger team like Orlando.
10. Sam Merrill (13 points) and Thomas Bryant (12) each added hustle and production themselves. So yes, there was a lot to like here. Everything but the final result.
11. The Cavs (40-26) were definitely a step slow defensively. Orlando scoring 128 points is not the norm. In fact, they don’t hit 100 quite a bit.
12. And being out of sorts defensively is often what leads to 37 free throws for the other guy. You spend too much time out of position and reaching. There. If you wanted a criticism, you got one.
13. Desmond Bane was unstoppable for the Magic (36-28) with 35 points. His floating-to-the-side three with less than a minute to go sealed the deal.
14. In short, sometimes in the NBA, you tip your cap, move on, and get ready for the next one. That’s the Cavs right now.
15. Next up? One of those weird schedule quirks where the Cavs visit Dallas on Friday, then turn around and host the Mavericks on Sunday. Those, of course, are the only two meetings of the season.
