Sixers forward Paul George acknowledged a “poorly timed decision” that led to his 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program.

George declined to share specifics about the failed test, calling it “more on the personal side,” but took responsibility for the situation.

“At the moment, I didn’t know exactly the repercussions,” he said, via PHLY Sports.

George indicated the decision stemmed in part from frustration with his physical condition.

“Obviously, being a pro athlete takes a toll on you, and my body wasn’t where I wanted it to be,” he said. “The expectation to perform because of my body not being where it needed to be … that’s what led to the poor decision at the time.”

He added: “I’m no superhero. I’m a human, and I made a mistake in that moment.”

George will return to the lineup Wednesday against Chicago, marking his first appearance since Jan. 29. While he was permitted to practice during the suspension, he said being away from games was “tough.”

Prior to the absence, George had been building momentum, including a 32-point performance against Milwaukee.

“We’d been playing good basketball,” he said. “So there was some devastation, just of the momentum that was being built.”

The suspension also allowed him additional time to recover physically following offseason knee surgery. George said he now feels fully healthy.

With 10 games remaining and Philadelphia currently in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, George emphasized the importance of a strong finish.

“We’re in the driver’s seat,” he said. “These are must-wins.”
