LeBron James free agency: Cavs reunion remains cleanest, most natural path

If LeBron James plays beyond this season, the Cavaliers will be right there. Maybe at the front of the line.

According to Tim Bontemps and Dave McMenamin of ESPN, multiple league and team sources believe the Cavs would make a third stint happen if James wants it.

“It’s the cleanest fit,” one Eastern Conference executive told ESPN.

“I always thought it made the most sense for him to go back home,” a Western Conference scout added.

Home still matters here.

James grew up in Akron. He was drafted No. 1 overall by the Cavs in 2003. He returned in 2014 and delivered the franchise’s lone championship in 2016, leading the Cavs past the 73-win Warriors after a 3-1 comeback in the Finals.

That part still resonates. It always will.

There are real basketball reasons, too.

The Cavs offer a younger core, a structured system, and a clearer path through the Eastern Conference compared to the West. The idea of James stepping into that environment, even in a reduced role, makes sense on multiple levels.

There are ways to make the numbers work. A sign-and-trade with the Lakers has been floated, potentially involving Jarrett Allen, who still has three years left on his deal.

The bigger picture is simpler. James is already the greatest player in Cavs history. His No. 23 will hang in the rafters. That part is done.

What isn’t done is how it ends.

Sources told Hoops Wire that a Cavs return is widely expected if James doesn’t retire. A farewell run in Northeast Ohio would bring everything full circle.

There’s also the reality of the crowd. James has been embraced every time he’s returned with the Lakers. The connection hasn’t gone anywhere.

And if this is about one last run, one last shot, one last moment, there may not be a cleaner script.

Cleveland has been there before. It might be there again.
