Projected lottery pick Mikel Brown Jr. plans to enter the 2026 NBA draft, he confirmed to Marc J. Spears of Andscape.
Brown, 20, turned in a strong freshman season at Louisville, averaging 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 29.2 minutes per game. He shot .410 from the field, .344 from three-point range and .844 from the free-throw line.

In other words, the production was there. The availability, not as much.
The 6-foot-5 guard was limited to 21 appearances (19 starts) due to a lingering back issue and didn’t play after February 28. While he was technically ruled out only for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, Brown acknowledged he likely wouldn’t have returned even if Louisville had advanced further.
“(My back) really was messed up, but I just kept trying to play through it,” Brown told Spears. “I always want to go full speed… I just wasn’t able to do that at the time. So, I felt like it was best for me to just sit out.”
The good news for NBA teams is that Brown says the injury, diagnosed as a back strain, is improving. He expects to participate in pre-draft workouts this spring and is aiming to suit up for Summer League in July.
So yeah, lottery teams will want a close look at his medicals, but Brown remains firmly in the mix as a potential top-10 pick. ESPN’s Jeremy Woo currently ranks him ninth on his big board, while Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman has him going No. 8 in his latest mock.
As for the scouting report, it’s a bit of give-and-take. Brown flashed real shot-making ability and offensive creativity at Louisville, though decision-making and efficiency came and went at times. Wasserman compares him to Tyler Herro, with some evaluators projecting him more as an offensive spark than a traditional lead guard.
Either way, if the back checks out, someone in the lottery is going to talk themselves into the upside. Happens every year.
