UNC’s Michael Malone: ‘Only college job I’ve ever considered’

Michael Malone didn’t exactly see this coming.

Six months ago, he was just another visitor at North Carolina practices. Notebook in hand. Sitting in the stands. Watching from a distance.

Now? He’s the guy in charge.

Malone was officially introduced Tuesday as the Tar Heels’ new head coach, landing a six-year, $50 million deal and stepping into one of college basketball’s biggest jobs.

“Really thankful for this opportunity,” he said, via ESPN. “This was the only college job I ever considered.”

That part stood out.

Malone, of course, comes from the NBA. More than 500 wins. A championship with the Nuggets in 2023. Not exactly someone looking to start over.

But this one got his attention.

History. Tradition. The whole thing.

“This was about being part of something bigger than myself,” Malone said.

North Carolina clearly felt the same.

School officials flew to meet with him for what turned into a five-hour sit-down at his home. Not long after, the deal was done. Big money. Big expectations.

And yeah, those expectations were mentioned right away.

Former athletic director Bubba Cunningham joked about moving championship banners to make room for another. Only coach to win both an NCAA and NBA title? Larry Brown.

Message received.

Malone takes over for Hubert Davis, who was let go after five seasons despite a strong overall record. Malone called the moment “bittersweet,” noting Davis welcomed him into the program during those early visits.

That stuck with him. So did the bigger picture.

Malone knows he’s stepping into a place that values its past as much as its future. He also knows he’s not walking in as a UNC lifer. No built-in ties. No shortcuts.

“I’m an outsider coming into a really intimate family,” he said.

That doesn’t mean he plans to play it safe.

Malone made it clear he’ll lean on people around the program, but he’s also bringing his own approach. That includes building a staff with deep recruiting connections and adjusting to the modern college landscape.

In other words, respect the past. But don’t get stuck in it.

North Carolina didn’t hire Malone to maintain.

They hired him to push it forward.
