Celtics center Robert Williams is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be out for training camp and the preseason, per Sean Deveney of Heavy.com.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Williams is expected to miss anywhere from four to six weeks following the procedure. He first experienced issues with the knee last season, suffering a torn meniscus and undergoing surgery back in March.
He played a role in the Celtics’ run to the Finals, as he was able to return less than a month after the surgery last time. This time, it may take Williams a little longer to get back on the court.
Williams, 24, is 6-foot-8 and appeared in 61 games last season, starting all and averaging 10.0 points and 9.6 rebounds — all while proving to be a nice complement to the likes of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
The Celtics open training camp next week in an effort to defend their East crown. They also lost newcomer Danilo Gallinari to a torn ACL, and with Williams’ injury, will need to find a way to keep the frontcourt together.
“The Celtics do hold two traded-player exceptions among their assets, too, and could potentially take on a new big man via trade,” Deveney wrote.
