Nets announce extensions for Jordi Fernandez, assistants, citing ‘strong foundation’

The Nets are sticking with their guy, as coach Jordi Fernandez and his staff have agreed to multi-year contract extensions, the team announced.

Jordi is a tremendous leader who, along with his coaching staff, put his stamp on this franchise from the moment he arrived in Brooklyn,” GM Sean Marks said, via Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. “Over his first two seasons, Jordi has built a strong foundation rooted in player development, a competitive spirit and honest communication, all of which have been embraced throughout our roster.

“The energy and passion the entire staff relentlessly pour into our players reverberates throughout the organization, and we are excited to have this group continue to lead our franchise into the future.”

Basically, team owner Joe Tsai and Marks are doubling down on Fernandez, even as the team continues to work through a rebuild.

The record won’t wow you. Brooklyn has gone 46-118 over the past two seasons.

But internally, this has been about development. Growth. Building something that lasts. By most accounts, that part is working.

Young players have gotten better. Veterans like Michael Porter Jr., Nic Claxton and Day’Ron Sharpe have found roles and consistency. Fernandez has leaned into that.

He arrived in 2024 after time with the Kings under Mike Brown, and before that spent years as an assistant with Michael Malone and the Nuggets. He also came up through the Cavaliers organization.

So the résumé checks out. Now he gets time. And for a rebuilding team, that might be the most important thing of all.
