The Warriors are headed into a summer that feels a little different. Not quite a rebuild, not quite a run-it-back. Somewhere in between. And right at the center of it all is Steve Kerr.
Kerr is not under contract for next season. He signed a two-year extension in 2024, and now finds himself staring at a roster with more questions than answers. He recently admitted he is unsure about what comes next.
There is still a belief he could be back. According to Nick Friedell and Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic, the expectation around the league is that Kerr and ownership can find common ground.
Inside the locker room, though, there is at least some doubt.
“You want my opinion? I think not,” Draymond Green said, via ESPN’s Anthony Slater. “Just because it feels like that. It felt like that was it.”
That is not nothing. Green has been at the heart of this run. If he is sensing a shift, it is worth paying attention.
At the same time, there is also support for Kerr to return. Friedell noted that players expressed hope during exit interviews that he will be back on the sideline next season.
The timeline is short. Slater reports Kerr is expected to take the next week or two before making a decision.
One thing seems clear. This is not shaping up as a ceremonial final ride. Golden State is not chasing a “last dance” scenario. The focus is on retooling the roster and finding the right voice to lead it.
That voice still could be Kerr. It just is not a lock.
