NBA players from 2023 draft class eligible for rookie extensions

When the new NBA year opens July 1, teams can begin negotiating rookie-scale extensions with players from the 2023 draft class. Those deals can run up to five years and would kick in starting with the 2027-28 season.

The deadline is the day before the regular season begins. If no deal is reached, those players head toward restricted free agency in 2027.

That group is loaded, as relayed by Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors.

Names like Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, Scoot Henderson and the Thompson twins headline a class that will shape the league’s next few years. Others such as Dereck Lively II, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Brandin Podziemski could also be in line for significant raises depending on how teams value their roles.

History suggests deals will get done.

Nine players signed rookie-scale extensions last offseason, a slight dip from previous years but still part of a seven-year run of at least nine agreements annually, per Hoops Rumors.

Expect more of the same this summer.

Teams often look to lock in core pieces early, avoiding the risk of restricted free agency and, in some cases, betting on continued growth.

Not every player will get one. A handful of 2023 first-round picks are already out of the mix after having options declined or being waived, including Kobe Brown, Jalen Hood-Schifino and Nick Smith Jr.

Still, the big picture is clear. This is the window where franchises decide who they believe in long term.
