Cavs’ Sam Merrill questionable for Game 2 with hamstring strain

The Cavs may be down a shooter, as Sam Merrill is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Merrill has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain after exiting Game 1 against Detroit, according to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor. He didn’t practice Wednesday and is listed as questionable for Game 2.

The timeline is unclear. The turnaround is quick.

Merrill played just seven minutes before leaving Tuesday’s game. Given the nature of the injury, his availability for Thursday is in doubt.

That would be a hit to the rotation.

Merrill carved out a role in the first round against Toronto, providing spacing and steady shooting. He knocked down 11-of-29 from three in that series, good for 37.9 percent, after shooting 42.1 percent from deep during the regular season.

With Merrill out, Cleveland leaned more on Max Strus and Jaylon Tyson, while also giving Keon Ellis minutes off the bench. Those adjustments could continue if Merrill isn’t ready.

“We’ll probably have to lean on those guys if Sam isn’t back right away,” coach Kenny Atkinson said.

Game 2 is coming fast. The Cavs are already looking for more offense. Merrill’s status is now part of that equation.
