Knicks lock in defensively, move within one win of East finals

The Knicks spent much of the season searching for consistency on defense.

They may have found it at the right time.

New York beat the 76ers 108-94 in Game 3, taking a 3-0 series lead behind another dominant fourth quarter.

The Knicks held Philadelphia to just 18 points in the final frame after limiting them to 12 in Game 2.

“I think the most important thing is to rely on our defense,” Jalen Brunson said, via ESPN. “There’s going to be times the ball is going through the hoop, and when it’s not, we have to control the things we can control.”

Right now, they are controlling everything.

Mikal Bridges led the charge defensively, stepping up with OG Anunoby sidelined. He chased Tyrese Maxey all night, holding the Sixers’ top scorer to limited looks early.

“I would be not doing my job if I didn’t point out the continued work that Mikal is doing,” coach Mike Brown said. “He’s busting his behind.”

Bridges has also found his offense, averaging more than 20 points over his past four games.

“Just trying to do whatever it takes to win,” he said.

The Knicks got contributions everywhere.

Landry Shamet delivered 15 points in key minutes. Brunson added 33, including nine in the fourth to steady things after Philadelphia made a push.

“We all want to win,” Brunson said. “There’s ups and downs… it’s all about how you move in a positive direction.”

New York has done just that.

They have adjusted, defended and closed. And now they are one win away from the conference finals.
