Magic eye shooting help, roster tweaks as offseason begins

The Magic may not have the same flexibility they did a year ago. That doesn’t mean they’re standing still.

President of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said improving the roster, particularly adding shooting, will once again be a priority this offseason, via Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel.

“Those are our challenges,” Weltman said. “Do we really want to break into this core? Because if we’re going to make a major move, then you’re going to break into the core.”

That is the balance Orlando is weighing.

The Magic took a big swing last summer by trading for Desmond Bane. This time around, the approach could be more measured.

“We have to see what major moves are in front of us,” Weltman said. “We have to see what smaller nibbles we can take.”

There are multiple paths.

Weltman pointed to roster upgrades, veteran additions and internal development as areas the team will explore. He also noted that, outside of landing a star, one of the biggest potential impacts can come from a coaching change.

“I do think that we have a lot of different avenues… to improve and get better,” he said.

Today, the core remains intact. The goal is building around it more effectively.
