Wizards seemingly zeroing in on AJ Dybantsa with No. 1 pick

The Wizards finally caught the break they’ve been chasing.

After years of spinning their wheels, Washington landed the No. 1 overall pick and a chance to reshape everything. The plan now is standard on the surface. Bring in the top prospects. Do the homework. Check every box.

Reality may be a little more straightforward.

According to David Aldridge of The Athletic, it would be a surprise if the Wizards don’t come away with BYU forward AJ Dybantsa. The organization has had its eye on this draft for a while, viewing Dybantsa as a potential franchise changer in the mold of Anthony Edwards or Cade Cunningham.

They didn’t get here by accident.

“I think Michael Winger and I, when we had the vision a few years ago, we wanted to give ourselves as many cracks at the apple as possible,” GM Will Dawkins said.

The results have followed. Washington has picked second, sixth and now first over the last three drafts. This time, there’s no sliding back.

“And that’s what we have this year,” Dawkins said. “The power of choice.”

For a franchise that’s spent decades searching for direction, Sunday felt different. Not finished. Just finally pointed somewhere.
