Warriors say they want Draymond Green, back, but ‘ball in his court’

The Warriors want Draymond Green to finish what he started.

Whether that happens is up to him.

Golden State has had conversations with Green about staying long term, according to general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., but the next move belongs to the veteran forward.

“The ball is in his court,” Dunleavy said, via The Athletic’s Nick Friedell.

Green holds a $27.7 million player option for next season, with a June 29 decision looming. He can opt in, explore an extension, or decline the deal and test free agency.

“I think we have had discussions where we want him to finish his career a Warrior,” Dunleavy said. “He kind of feels the same way. I would expect him to be back, but it’s his call.”

Green, 36, has spent all 14 seasons of his career in Golden State. A former Defensive Player of the Year, four-time All-Star and four-time champion, he remains one of the franchise’s foundational pieces.

Coach Steve Kerr echoed that sentiment.

“The number one thing is, it’s up to him,” Kerr said. “I am committed to coaching him, coaching Steph for as long as they’re here. I look at them as collaborators, and what we’ve built is pretty special.”
