Arbitrator rules Terry Rozier must forfeit most of salary amid gambling case

Former Heat guard Terry Rozier is facing a costly setback away from the court.

According to multiple reports, an arbitrator recently ruled that Rozier will forfeit most of his $26.6 million salary for the 2025-26 season because the conditions of his pretrial release prevent him from fully satisfying the terms of his NBA contract.

The ruling stems from Rozier’s ongoing federal legal case.

As part of his release conditions, Rozier was initially prohibited from contacting members of both the Heat and Hornets organizations, including players, coaches and medical personnel. Restrictions involving Miami have since been lifted, but limitations connected to Charlotte reportedly remain in place.

Those restrictions became a significant issue because Rozier’s contract obligations require him to perform services for NBA teams.

“Under the current ruling of the arbitrator, an inability to play for or against the Charlotte Hornets would constitute a ‘failure to perform services,'” Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, wrote in a recent court filing.

The legal situation intensified when federal prosecutors added a bribery charge to an existing fraud indictment.

According to the allegations, Rozier accepted a $100,000 bribe in exchange for providing information to bettors regarding plans to leave a March 2023 game early because of an injury.

Rozier has denied wrongdoing, and the case remains ongoing.

The veteran guard is also scheduled to become a free agent next month, creating additional uncertainty about his NBA future.

Regardless of how the case ultimately unfolds, the financial consequences are already proving substantial.

The situation serves as another reminder of the risks that can accompany gambling-related allegations in professional sports, particularly as sports betting continues to expand across the United States.

As Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote, “The case is a clear example of what happens when the lure of getting a little more can jeopardize much more than that.”

And, in classic Florio fashion, he couldn’t resist one final jab:

“If Rozier had just spent 99 cents for the ebook edition of Big Shield, he would have learned that lesson without losing millions. And without being at risk of going to prison.”
