The 76ers are promoting assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to executive vice president of basketball operations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Nelson will serve as the No. 2 executive in Philadelphia’s basketball operations department, working under newly hired president of basketball operations Mike Gansey.
The move comes as little surprise.
Multiple reports in recent weeks indicated Nelson was expected to receive a significant promotion regardless of who ultimately replaced former president Daryl Morey. Nelson was among the candidates who interviewed for the top job before the Sixers hired Gansey.
A Pennsylvania native and former Saint Joseph’s standout, Nelson spent 14 seasons in the NBA and earned an All-Star selection during his tenure with the Magic. Since joining the Sixers’ front office six years ago, he has steadily climbed the organizational ladder after initially being hired as a scout.
Philadelphia is also retaining another key executive.
According to Charania, executive Prosper Karangwa has agreed to a contract extension after drawing interest from both the Lakers and Mavericks. Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein previously reported Karangwa was expected to remain with the organization.
Meanwhile, longtime general manager Elton Brand is not expected to return in that role. However, Charania reported Brand is discussing a new position with the franchise’s parent company.
Brand, a former NBA All-Star and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 draft, reportedly chose not to interview for the president of basketball operations opening. He continues to be highly regarded throughout the organization.
