For the first time since LeBron James joined the Lakers, there appears to be genuine uncertainty about what comes next.
According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, there is a “legitimate chance” James will not be with Los Angeles next season, whether because he chooses retirement or decides to finish his career elsewhere.

“For the first time since James came to Los Angeles eight years ago, there’s a legitimate chance he won’t be playing for the Lakers next season,” Bontemps said.
That comment is sure to fuel even more speculation surrounding James’ future as free agency looms.
As we’ve written repeatedly, the Cavaliers, Warriors and Lakers continue to be among the teams most frequently linked to James. Meanwhile, reports from ESPN, NBC Sports Bay Area and others have indicated there is at least some curiosity regarding the possibility of James joining Golden State alongside Stephen Curry.
Of course, a return to Cleveland remains a favorite topic among Cavs fans. Whether it makes basketball sense is another debate entirely.
The Cavs are fresh off an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals and already have major financial decisions looming with James Harden expected to return on a new deal. Any path to landing James would likely require significant maneuvering.
Then again, this is LeBron James we’re talking about.
As his longtime agent, Rich Paul, recently revealed, roughly 10 to 12 teams have already contacted him regarding James’ future.
This is just the way the game is played when the most popular player of the last 20-plus years becomes available. But until James officially commits to the Lakers, signs elsewhere, or announces retirement, the rumors are only going to grow louder.
And if Bontemps is right, the possibility of LeBron wearing something other than a Lakers uniform next season may be more realistic than many previously believed.
