Hawks, CJ McCollum agree to one-year extension

The Hawks are keeping one of their veteran leaders around a little longer.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Atlanta guard CJ McCollum has agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension. Charania reported that the deal includes a trade kicker, according to McCollum’s agent, Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports Management.

McCollum had been eligible to sign an extension through June 30 and was entering the final year of his contract.

The move comes after a strong half-season in Atlanta following his January arrival from Washington as part of the Trae Young trade.

While the Hawks ultimately fell short of a deep playoff run, McCollum quickly proved his value.

He helped Atlanta take a 2-1 series lead over the eventual champion Knicks in the opening round, delivering a game-winning fadeaway jumper late in Game 3 and scoring 32 points in a Game 2 victory at New York.

McCollum also played a major role in Atlanta’s late-season surge, as the Hawks won 18 of 20 games to secure a playoff berth.

In 41 games with Atlanta, the 34-year-old averaged 18.7 points while shooting 35.7 percent from three-point range.

The extension also keeps alive one of the NBA’s more remarkable shooting streaks. McCollum has now made at least 150 three-pointers in 11 consecutive seasons, the longest active run in the league.

A 13-year veteran, McCollum remains one of the NBA’s most respected scorers and locker-room voices, and the Hawks clearly felt he was worth keeping around.
