Tobias Harris expected to leave Pistons; Spurs mentioned as possibility

Pistons veteran forward Tobias Harris appears headed elsewhere.

During ESPN’s NBA free agency coverage Tuesday, Brian Windhorst said he expects Harris to leave Detroit after two seasons there.

“They’re going to lose Tobias Harris,” Windhorst said, via RealGM.

Windhorst also identified the defending Western Conference champion Spurs as a potential landing spot.

“Tobias Harris has a chance to end up in San Antonio,” he added.

The comments come after the Pistons agreed to a three-year, $51 million contract with John Collins, a move widely viewed as filling the starting power forward spot previously occupied by Harris.

Detroit had hoped to retain Harris entering free agency, but reports indicated he planned to meet with multiple teams after the two sides were unable to reach an agreement during the club’s exclusive negotiating window.

Harris, who turns 34 later this month, averaged 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 63 games last season while helping Detroit return to the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Spurs have been searching for veteran frontcourt help this offseason. Harris, Rui Hachimura and John Collins were among the names previously linked to San Antonio before Collins ultimately signed with Detroit.
