Even the Sixers’ own players didn’t see the Jaylen Brown trade coming.
According to Gina Mizell of The Philadelphia Inquirer, rookie VJ Edgecombe initially feared he had been traded when executive Jameer Nelson repeatedly tried to reach him.
“I was like, ‘Man, it’s free agency, why you calling me so much?'” Edgecombe said. “I thought I was gone.”
Second-year wing Justin Edwards was equally surprised.
“They were talking about Jaylen Brown and PG (Paul George), but I didn’t pay attention to it,” Edwards said. “Then I looked again. I’m like, ‘Oh, snap!'”
Edwards immediately called Tyrese Maxey, only to learn the All-Star guard had already known about the deal for several hours.
Meanwhile, as Adam Aaronson of PhillyVoice pointed out, the blockbuster also leaves Philadelphia with limited flexibility when it comes to future first-round picks, making another major trade more difficult in the near future.
Knicks
Knicks star Jalen Brunson says his recovery from wrist surgery remains on schedule.
Speaking with Variety, Brunson said he’ll remain in a cast for about another month before beginning the next phase of his rehabilitation.
“I should be good,” Brunson said.
The All-Star guard revealed he dealt with significant pain throughout the postseason because a damaged tendon repeatedly snapped over the bone in his wrist whenever he shot the ball.
Still, Brunson said the adrenaline of playoff games helped him push through the injury before ultimately undergoing surgery earlier this month.
Clippers
The Clippers are adding one of the G League’s top shot blockers.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Los Angeles has agreed to a two-way contract with 7-foot-5 center Jamarion Sharp.
Sharp earned G League Defensive Player of the Year honors last season after averaging a league-best 3.9 blocks per game for the Texas Legends. He also impressed during Summer League, averaging 7.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in five appearances.
The Clippers are expected to lean on Sharp for frontcourt depth while fellow big man Yanic Konan Niederhauser continues recovering from foot procedures.
