Cavs, Warriors not interested in trading for Anthony Davis amid LeBron wait

If LeBron James is waiting to see whether Anthony Davis can join him at his next stop, two potential destinations apparently aren’t interested in helping make that happen.

The Cavaliers and Warriors have no interest in trading for Davis, according to Ashish Mathur of Dallas Hoops Journal, citing league sources.

That is notable given some of the speculation surrounding James’ unusually long free agency.

Davis, another Rich Paul and Klutch Sports client, was James’ teammate with the Lakers and helped him win the 2020 championship in the Disney bubble. Rumors have circulated that part of the holdup with James could involve Klutch exploring whether Davis might eventually land alongside him again.

Per Dallas Hoops Journal, though, neither Cleveland nor Golden State is interested in going down that road.

“Klutch is trying to get AD to Cleveland or Golden State,” a source told Mathur. “Neither team wants to do it.”

Davis is currently with the Wizards after being acquired from the Mavericks in February. He becomes eligible for a contract extension Aug. 6, adding another date to an offseason that has already featured more than its share of LeBron-related theories.

The Heat aren’t expected to pursue a Davis trade, either, but their situation is obviously different. Miami already made its massive frontcourt addition this offseason by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, who joins Bam Adebayo.

Mathur reports that Antetokounmpo and Adebayo have been recruiting James. Whether any of the Davis stuff actually factors into James’ decision is another matter. At this point, that’s probably an important distinction.

James has been a free agent for nearly a month, and theories about what he’s waiting for have seemingly changed by the day. Cleveland has been prominently involved throughout the process.

Golden State has pursued James, though ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported this week that the Warriors are pessimistic about their chances. Miami remains in the picture as well.

Then came another report from Joe Vardon of The Athletic, who quoted a source close to James as saying, “Nobody knows right now except LeBron,” before adding, “and I’m not even sure LeBron knows.”

So perhaps there isn’t some elaborate master plan involving Davis. Perhaps James really is still deciding. If so, he’s certainly taking his time.

Davis and James do have plenty of history. They spent six seasons together with the Lakers and won a championship. They’re represented by the same agency. It isn’t difficult to understand why the possibility of another reunion would generate speculation.

But if Dallas Hoops Journal’s reporting is accurate, it doesn’t sound as if the Cavaliers or Warriors intend to make that reunion happen themselves.

And after almost a month of waiting on LeBron, that’s at least one scenario we may be able to cross off the board.
